South tennis battles Torrington

CHEYENNE — The Cheyenne South boys tennis team came close to earning the program’s first team win on Saturday, falling to Torrington 3-2.

Lincoln Trujillo won his No. 1 single match over Tyler Ring, 6-3, 6-1. The doubles team of Jake Freeman and Lencho Beltran won the No. 1 doubles battled Jon Cummings and Liam Nadeau to a 6-1, 6-1 win. Continue reading

South boys find a new level of confidence after positive weekend

CHEYENNE — It’s a 24-hour stretch that could change a lot for the Cheyenne South boys soccer program.

If nothing else, it was a pair of games that certainly show how far the team has come.

On Friday, the Bison traveled to Laramie for a Class 4A East Conference battle with the Plainsmen. South led 1-0 in the game before Laramie rallied to claim a 3-1 win.

About 15 hours later, the team returned home to face Class 3A Torrington and earned a 3-2 win.

“We’ve grown a lot as a team throughout the season. We’ve had a couple injuries but we’re playing through them,” South defender Abner Gracia said.  Continue reading

Central grad trying to resurrect Torrington football

CASPER — I hesitate to say that Torrington’s football program has fallen on hard times when a siren creates a break in my conversation with Mark Lenhardt.

As the siren goes away, I try to characterize the Trailblazers’ struggles as a “down cycle” when the second-year coach interrupts me.

“To say that we’ve fallen on hard times is true,” he said. “There hasn’t been a winning season in 14 years.”

It’s actually been 16.
