East young gun Evans proves she belongs

CHEYENNE — Everyday, Cheyenne East freshman Kayla Evans has to prove something.

She has to prove she belongs on the varsity roster. She has to prove she can keep pace with the veteran players. She has to prove she can contribute to East’s success.

Do two goals and an assist prove anything?

Against Cheyenne South, Evans came off the bench to score twice and hand out an assist as the Lady Thunderbirds rolled to a 7-0 win over the Lady Bison.

“(East coach Jim Gardner) said that he really wants the freshmen that are on varsity to show him why they’re up there and I really wanted to show him that I’ve been working hard. I just kept on running and running and it paid off,” Evans said.  Continue reading

Central’s Fisher more than just a goalie

CHEYENNE — Kelley Fisher planted her foot and simply launched the shot.

From about 25 yards out, the ball curved in the air, glided past the outstretched hands of Scottsbluff goalie Morgan Westphal and settled into the back of the net.

And just like that, the Cheyenne Central girls soccer team had a 7-0 lead over the Lady Bearcats. And Fisher had a goal to be remembered.

“It was kind of just a rush. We were up by some and they were like, ‘Kelley, we want you to get a goal.’ So my team was definitely pulling for me and helping me out,” Fisher said. “I felt like it was a decent shot and I put it where it needed to go so I’m proud of it.” Continue reading

South goalie Beltran rises to the challenge

CHEYENNE — If Oxsanna Beltran had been a little nervous about the situation, no one could have blamed her.

One minute, she was standing on the Cheyenne South sideline, the next she was being asked to fill the void in goal after an injury to teammate Constance Woolhether.

Pressure? Beltran knows a thing or two about combating pressure.

“I feel like I have a lot more pressure but I think I’m handling it pretty well,” Beltran said. “I was starting goalie last year and the year before that so  I just feel like it’s my spot to do good for my team and make sure my goal is protected.” Continue reading
