Chad DeBruyn called for Karli Noble during the second half of Cheyenne South’s loss to Rock Springs on Jan. 14.

“Karli, do you need me to call one,” DeBruyn asked, referring to a timeout. “I’ve got one if you need me to call one.”

DeBruyn was consulting his senior guard about timeouts because it was going to provide a rare break for her. The Lady Bison coach needs Noble and junior guard Gabby Turano – his leading scorers – on the court as much as possible.

About the only instances they’re going to be substituted out is if they are injured or in foul trouble. But that last part isn’t a guarantee. Continue reading

South’s Deja King working her way back from injury

Cheyenne South junior Deja King trailed behind every other player on the court as Gillette raced into its offense after collecting a rebound Saturday.

The Lady Bison forward wasn’t dogging it by any means.

Try as King might, her body just wouldn’t let her keep up.

She is far from being in game shape, the result of spending a couple of months wearing a walking boot to heal a Jones fracture in her right foot.

As if suffering a second break to the outside or her right foot wasn’t bad enough, King couldn’t do any physical activity while she let her foot heal — not even pedaling a stationary bike. Continue reading

Tough game good for Pine Bluffs girls

The No. 1-ranked Pine Bluffs girls basketball team experienced two things Saturday that it hadn’t yet this season: Trailing at halftime and trailing after the third quarter.

In fact, the reigning Class 2A state champions also trailed Lusk after the first quarter. Fortunately for the Lady Hornets, they outscored Lusk 20-10 in the fourth and escaped with a 55-48 road win.

It wasn’t pretty but it may actually have been good for Pine Bluffs, coach Lindsey Forbes said Monday evening. Continue reading
