The Cheyenne East girls soccer team plays a game during a nearly 2-hour lightning delay prior to their Class 4A semifinal match with Laramie on Friday in Rock Springs. The Lady Thunderbirds said the games they played in Rock Springs High’s auxiliary gym actually helped calm their nerves before the match. Blaine McCartney/Wyoming Tribune Eagle

ROCK SPRINGS – It would be reasonable to expect the Cheyenne East girls soccer team to have sweated through a pair of lengthy lightning delays at the Class 4A state tournament in Rock Springs.

The Lady Thunderbirds had just taken the field for Friday’s semifinal match with Laramie when they were sent back to the locker room for two hours.

They were forced inside with 25 minutes to play in Saturday’s state championship with Sheridan. That delay lasted more than two hours.

Carter solid in return for East

ROCK SPRINGS – Cheyenne East senior goalkeeper Shayne Carter has dealt with an array of injuries this season.

She missed half of the basketball season after suffering a broken hand during preseason practices.

During soccer, Carter suffered a head injury in a collision with Laramie forward Ariel Romero early in the year. Then she started missing time due to hip, back and neck ailments.

The worst of those injuries are tears in her hip flexor.

Carter’s last bit of extensive playing time prior to Thursday’s Class 4A state quarterfinal win over Casper Natrona County came on May 2 in a home win over Gillette. She didn’t record a save after entering in the second half of the Lady Thunderbirds’ 3-2 opening round victory Thursday, but she still looked solid.

That Carter is playing at all for the reigning champions is noteworthy.

East freshman Morgan Burke netted the game winner in the 97th minute, classmate Katie Loken was strong defensively. On the Central side, Alexa Becerra opened the scoring and Sarah Krysl was strong defensively.

But there was one player who impressed me more than anyone — Central freshman goaltender Abby Fearneyhough. Continue reading
