Natrona’s recent helmet history

As promised in a previous blog post today, no Wyoming high school football team has switched up the look of its helmets in the last few years more than Casper Natrona County. For more than a decade before this, the only change I can think of came when the Mustangs ditched the black stripes in favor of a single orange stripe.

Take a look at the changes. Continue reading

Natrona wants to make special teams woes a distant memory

Cheyenne East’s student section wasted no time starting the chant when Casper Natrona County’s Logan Wilson toed the free-throw line this past Dec. 7.

Wilson, Logan

Logan Wilson

“Wiiiiiiide left! Wiiiiiiide left! Wiiiiiiide left!”

The taunt was a cruel reminder that Wilson had missed a 36-yard field goal late in the Class 4A football championship, a game that East won 14-13 on Nov. 16 at War Memorial Stadium in Laramie. Making that field goal would have given the Mustangs a 16-14 lead and, almost certainly, secured them second consecutive state title.

That loss was Natrona’s fourth of the season. All of those setbacks came by just one point and three of those games went to at least one overtime. Three of them came down to late-game point after touchdowns and the state title tilt was decided, in part, by a field goal. Continue reading

Carter solid in return for East

ROCK SPRINGS – Cheyenne East senior goalkeeper Shayne Carter has dealt with an array of injuries this season.

She missed half of the basketball season after suffering a broken hand during preseason practices.

During soccer, Carter suffered a head injury in a collision with Laramie forward Ariel Romero early in the year. Then she started missing time due to hip, back and neck ailments.

The worst of those injuries are tears in her hip flexor.

Carter’s last bit of extensive playing time prior to Thursday’s Class 4A state quarterfinal win over Casper Natrona County came on May 2 in a home win over Gillette. She didn’t record a save after entering in the second half of the Lady Thunderbirds’ 3-2 opening round victory Thursday, but she still looked solid.

That Carter is playing at all for the reigning champions is noteworthy.
