Tate took on bigger role in East win over Natrona

Junior Savannah Tate’s role with the Cheyenne East volleyball team has grown throughout this season. But it has never been larger than it was during Thursday evening’s 25-20, 25-17-23-25, 25-21 victory over Casper Natrona County.

Not only did Tate play more than she has in any other match that I’ve seen this season, but she also played well and notched several key kills that stemmed Fillies’ runs.

“She’s a smart hitter and did a great job against their big blocker out there,” East coach Dan Box said. “We’ve been able to use certain people in the certain situations and Savannah did a good job there.” Continue reading

CHEYENNE — Stephanie Dickinson, a former standout athlete at Cheyenne South, will be joining the Laramie County Community College volleyball team in the next few days.

Dickinson has already tried out and made the team. She is awaiting a physical before she can play or take part in team practice.

LCCC interim coach Cynthia Henning met with Dickinson before she tried out and talk about what she expected from the freshman. So far, she has met those expectations.

“We wanted somebody that was going to learn, work hard and she has come in and done that,” Henning said.  Continue reading

South’s near upset

Cheyenne South’s volleyball team nearly grabbed its first Class 4A victory Tuesday night. The Bison took the first two games from fourth-ranked Cheyenne Central 25-22 and 25-18. They gritted out a back-and-forth first game that featured five lead changes and 10 ties. Then — just to prove that the first game wasn’t a fluke — South never trailed in the second game.

Unfortunately for the Bison, Central won the next two games 25-22, 25-15 and 15-9 to escape with the win.

While Central’s performance was certainly gutty, South’s effort is what stood out to me.
