Tate took on bigger role in East win over Natrona

Junior Savannah Tate’s role with the Cheyenne East volleyball team has grown throughout this season. But it has never been larger than it was during Thursday evening’s 25-20, 25-17-23-25, 25-21 victory over Casper Natrona County.

Not only did Tate play more than she has in any other match that I’ve seen this season, but she also played well and notched several key kills that stemmed Fillies’ runs.

“She’s a smart hitter and did a great job against their big blocker out there,” East coach Dan Box said. “We’ve been able to use certain people in the certain situations and Savannah did a good job there.” Continue reading

Lyons approach at service line helps Central topple East

CHEYENNE — Geri Wagner had some words for Lauren Lyons before and during Wednesday’s volleyball match with Cheyenne East.

Lyons, a junior at Cheyenne Central, is generally one of the Lady Indians better servers but her approach at the line lately hadn’t been all that strong.

“She’s been struggling a little bit with her serves lately, being a little tentative. She didn’t want to make an error,” Wagner said. Continue reading

East volleyball hoping a little summer work will develop continuity

East volleyball players Amberly Chisholm, Kaylie Mossey and Sally Sanders were three of the players who stuck together over the summer and kept playing. They're hoping that experience creates some quick continuity on the Lady T-Birds squad.

CHEYENNE – The offseason in any sport is key to an athlete. They either work on their skills and improve them or step back and possibly become rusty.

For the volleyballers at Cheyenne East, the 2012 summer was an experience they’re hoping will make them a better team because they spent the months as a team.

A large group of the Lady Thunderbirds joined up to play down in Colorado as part of a select team under the guidance of East coach Dan Box. They traveled throughout the region playing in tournaments.

While other high school players joined their select teams and split up, East kept the group together.

“It also allows you to come into the season one step ahead instead of one step back,” senior Amberly Chisolm said. Continue reading
