Lyons approach at service line helps Central topple East

CHEYENNE — Geri Wagner had some words for Lauren Lyons before and during Wednesday’s volleyball match with Cheyenne East.

Lyons, a junior at Cheyenne Central, is generally one of the Lady Indians better servers but her approach at the line lately hadn’t been all that strong.

“She’s been struggling a little bit with her serves lately, being a little tentative. She didn’t want to make an error,” Wagner said. Continue reading

Service in style – Central shines on the back line against South

CHEYENNE — Over the weekend, Cheyenne Central volleyball coach Geri Wagner had a handful of gripes with the way her team was playing at the Casper Invitational. One of the biggest was her squads effort at the service line.

Against Cheyenne South, Wagner got what she wanted from her team in spades.

The Lady Indians used an ultra-aggressive approach against the Lady Bison which resulted in a steady stream of points and three-set sweep, 25-12, 25-15, 25-16.

“We did not serve well this weekend. We were pretty passive, kind of lobbed it over, so last night we spent half our practice working on aggressive, focused serving,” Wagner said. “You can take a team off the floor by aggressive, focused serving.” Continue reading

South’s near upset

Cheyenne South’s volleyball team nearly grabbed its first Class 4A victory Tuesday night. The Bison took the first two games from fourth-ranked Cheyenne Central 25-22 and 25-18. They gritted out a back-and-forth first game that featured five lead changes and 10 ties. Then — just to prove that the first game wasn’t a fluke — South never trailed in the second game.

Unfortunately for the Bison, Central won the next two games 25-22, 25-15 and 15-9 to escape with the win.

While Central’s performance was certainly gutty, South’s effort is what stood out to me.
