Poll position: Week 9

Here’s how I voted in this week’s WyoPreps.com coaches and media Class 4A football poll and why.

No. 1. Gillette (9-0): The Camels capitalized on Cheyenne East’s mistakes and grabbed a 41-6 win at Okie Blanchard Stadium.

No. 2 Sheridan (7-2): The Broncs go back to No. 2 despite their home loss to Casper Natrona County. I’ve seen Sheridan live against Cheyenne Central and on video against Cheyenne East. I have been impressed with the Broncs both times.

No. 3 Cheyenne East (7-2): Turnovers continue to be a problem for East, but it stays at No. 3 because its only losses were to the No. 1- and 2-ranked teams on my ballot.

No. 4 Casper Natrona County (6-3): I’ve asked more coaches about where the Mustangs fit in the playoff picture and every one of them has told me that they are a very legitimate state title contender. I could have put NC anywhere from No. 2 to No. 4. I went with four because of the three losses.

No. 5 Casper Kelly Walsh (5-4): The Trojans stay in my top five by virtue of being the only other Class 4A team with a winning record. I can’t really put Cheyenne Central here because the Trojans won their head-to-head meeting. I also can’t see putting Laramie here because it is 3-6 on the year. Yes, that third win was a come-from-behind effort against the Trojans, but I still think Kelly Walsh is the better team.
