Poll position: Week 4

Here’s how I voted in this week’s WyoPreps.com coaches’ and media Class 4A football poll and why.

No. 1 Gillette (4-0): The Camels won at Casper Natrona County in overtime and move back to No. 1 with Cheyenne East’s loss at Sheridan. The fact that Gillette is finding ways to win without University of Wyoming commitment Austin Fort at quarterback has it holding the top spot on my ballot. It proves that the Camels aren’t a one-man show. Maybe I shouldn’t have moved them out of the top spot on my ballot last week.

No. 2 Sheridan (4-0): I questioned the Broncs credentials last week. How did they respond? By going out and roughing up top-ranked Cheyenne East 42-21 in a game that wasn’t really as close as the final score. Sheridan thrived on big plays and bottled up East’s offense to stake a 42-7 lead. That made it hard for me to keep from vaulting the Broncs all the way to No. 1. Sheridan faces winless Rock Springs this week before a big-time matchup with Gillette on Oct. 4.

No. 3 Cheyenne East (3-1): I may have dropped the Thunderbirds to fourth after their loss at Sheridan if they hadn’t won at Natrona in Week 2. That triple-overtime victory is keeping them above Natrona in my poll.

No. 4 Casper Natrona County (2-2): The Mustangs lost another overtime heartbreaker by a single point at home. They’re clearly one of the top four teams in the state and should have no problem getting to 5-2 heading into their Oct. 18 matchup with Sheridan.

No. 5 Cheyenne Central (2-2): The Indians won at Rock Springs. They did nothing to fall of my ballot and none of the other 2-2 teams (Evanston and Casper Kelly Walsh) did anything to move into the top 5.
