South tennis battles Torrington

CHEYENNE — The Cheyenne South boys tennis team came close to earning the program’s first team win on Saturday, falling to Torrington 3-2.

Lincoln Trujillo won his No. 1 single match over Tyler Ring, 6-3, 6-1. The doubles team of Jake Freeman and Lencho Beltran won the No. 1 doubles battled Jon Cummings and Liam Nadeau to a 6-1, 6-1 win.

Burns volleyball goes 4-1 at Lingle tourney

CHEYENNE — The Burns volleyball team got the 2013 season off to a strong start with four wins at the Lingle Dogger Invitational on Friday.

The Lady Broncs earned wins over Sundance (25-20, 25-19), Kaycee (25-15, 25-18), Midwest (25-5, 25-23) and Upton (25-13, 25-14). Burns fell to Big Horn 25-17, 25-24 in the middle of its five matches.

Jessica Malm led the team with 35 digs, Mckenzie Ward had 20 kills, Chelsea Engel added 44 assists and Alex McCart put down six blocks.

*East cross-country competes at Arapahoe Warrior Invitational

CHEYENNE — The Cheyenne East boys cross-country team took ninth overall at the Arapahoe Warrior Invitational on Friday. A total of 43 teams competed at the event.

Michael Downey led the team by placing 25th overall in 17 minutes, 19 seconds. Teammate Nate Fredrick just missed out on the top 50, placing 51st in 17:40. In all, 300 runners took part in the race.

The East girls took 35th overall with Abbie Fredrick placing 91st individually. She finished in 21:45. A total of 282 girls took part in the race and 40 teams competed.

East girls: 91. Fredrick, 21:45; 208. Bishop, 23:55; 218. Baker, 24:10; 228. Rowley, 24:21; 243. Froelicher, 25:01.
